Kratom Frequently Asked Questions
Plain-English answers to the most common kratom questions — dosage, legality, safety, testing standards, and what separates a quality vendor from a sketchy one.
Products
- What products do you offer?
- We offer a premium selection of botanical products including kratom liquid extracts, gummies, and kratom beverages (MitraNade). All products are third-party tested for alkaloid potency, heavy metals, microbials, and pesticide residue.
- What is the difference between kratom extract and kratom powder?
- Kratom extract is a concentrated form of kratom where the active alkaloids (primarily mitragynine) are extracted and standardized into a liquid or solid. This delivers a precise, consistent dose in a smaller volume compared to raw kratom powder. 4 Leaf Herbals' 60ml liquid extract is lab-tested for exact mitragynine content so you know exactly what you're taking.
- How do I choose the right product?
- If you're new to kratom, we recommend starting with our gummies or MitraNade lemonade for a more measured, approachable experience. Our liquid extracts are popular with experienced users who want precise dosing and fast absorption. Read our Kratom Strains guide to understand which effect profile fits your goals.
- Are your products tested for quality?
- Yes — every batch undergoes rigorous third-party laboratory testing before it ships. We test for alkaloid potency (mitragynine, 7-hydroxymitragynine), heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury), microbial contamination, mold, yeast, and pesticide residue. You can view our Certificates of Analysis on the Lab Results page.
- Is kratom legal?
- Kratom is federally legal in the United States, though it is banned in a handful of states and municipalities. As of May 2026, kratom is regulated or banned in Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Louisiana, Vermont, and Wisconsin, and in some counties and cities. (Rhode Island repealed its ban effective April 1, 2026; Louisiana enacted a new ban effective August 1, 2025.) It is legal throughout Florida. Always verify the laws in your specific state or locality before purchasing.
- What is kratom used for?
- Kratom users report using it for a range of purposes depending on dose and strain: white and green vein varieties at low doses are popular for energy and focus; red vein strains at higher doses are used for relaxation, stress relief, and sleep support. Kratom is not FDA-approved to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Kratom Science & Safety
- What is mitragynine?
- Mitragynine is the primary alkaloid in Mitragyna speciosa (kratom), making up approximately 66% of the plant's total alkaloid content. It is responsible for kratom's stimulating effects at low doses by interacting with adrenergic receptors. At higher doses, it partially agonizes mu-opioid receptors, contributing to sedative and analgesic effects. 4 Leaf Herbals' lab results publish exact mitragynine content per batch.
- What is 7-hydroxymitragynine?
- 7-Hydroxymitragynine (7-OH-M) is a minor but potent alkaloid in kratom leaves, present at lower concentrations than mitragynine but with significantly higher binding affinity at opioid receptors. It is primarily associated with kratom's sedating, pain-relieving, and relaxing effects. Red vein kratom strains are generally higher in 7-OH-M relative to mitragynine than white or green strains.
- Is kratom the same as an opioid?
- Kratom is not a pharmaceutical opioid. While mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine do partially bind opioid receptors, kratom is a naturally occurring plant with a distinct alkaloid profile. The DEA has not scheduled kratom as a controlled substance. However, because of its partial opioid receptor activity, daily use can lead to physical dependence — moderation and rotating use days are widely recommended.
- What does AKA GMP Qualified mean?
- AKA GMP (American Kratom Association Good Manufacturing Practice) qualification means a kratom vendor has undergone a third-party audit to verify compliance with manufacturing, labeling, testing, and facility standards set by the AKA. It is the highest voluntary quality benchmark in the kratom industry. 4 Leaf Herbals is an AKA GMP Qualified vendor — meaning every batch is third-party tested and our facilities and processes have been independently audited.
- How do I read a Certificate of Analysis (COA)?
- A COA is a lab document issued by an ISO-certified independent laboratory that verifies what's actually in a product. For kratom, the key sections are: alkaloid panel (shows mitragynine % and 7-OH-M %), heavy metals panel (lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury — all should be below safety thresholds), microbial panel (E. coli, Salmonella, mold, yeast — should be absent or within limits), and pesticide panel (should show non-detect for regulated pesticides). 4 Leaf Herbals publishes full batch-specific COAs on our Lab Results page.
