Plant origin, animal-free

Mitragyna speciosa is a tree in the coffee family (Rubiaceae). Its leaves are picked, dried, and processed without any animal-derived input. At the raw-leaf and ground-powder stage, kratom is inherently vegan — there is no possible route by which an animal product could end up in the supply chain.

The question becomes meaningful once kratom is processed into consumer formats. Each format introduces its own ingredient list, and a few of those ingredient categories sometimes use animal-derived components.

Format-by-format breakdown

Powder

Inherently vegan. Single-ingredient product: dried, ground kratom leaf. Verify nothing else has been added (some vendors blend "enhanced" powders with extracts — those are still vegan, but check the ingredient list anyway).

Capsules

Depends on the capsule shell. The two common types:

Gelatin capsules: derived from animal collagen (typically bovine or porcine). Not vegan. Less common in modern kratom products but still found in some lower-cost product lines.
Vegetable cellulose capsules (HPMC): derived from plant fiber. Fully vegan. The standard for most current kratom vendors because it removes the dietary-restriction friction at minimal cost increase.
